Job Description

Reports To

Lead Vet and/or Business Owner

POSITION SUMMARY

Graduate Veterinary Surgeons are responsible for providing excellent standards of care in medically assessing, diagnosing and treating animals presented to the clinic, and for dedicating themselves to their ongoing learning and development.

DUTIES

Consults and Client Service

  • Carry out consultations with clients and their pets in a timely, efficient manner; seek advice or assistance from more experienced vets as required.
  • Build excellent relationships with clients and maintain thorough patient histories and case notes.
  • Provide excellent client service, including always using pet’s name/correct sex; give pats, compliments and treats; offer written material wherever possible; help pets and clients to feel as relaxed as possible during visits.
  • Observe excellent standards of care at all times; work up cases diagnostically and execute thorough assessments to ensure accurate diagnosing.
  • Formulate treatment plans with the goal of providing the best care and outcomes for the pet; communicate clearly and thoroughly with clients. Always provide written estimates to clients with pets admitted for surgery or hospital treatment.
  • Promote preventative health care to all clients; ensure every consult receives a compliance check.
  • Promote premium pet foods or, where necessary, prescription diets.
  • Monitor dental health for all patients, ensure any pet with a dental grade not equal to zero is on a documented dental plan.
  • Ensure every client receives a case follow-up within five days from an appropriate team member; this may involve a recall or revisit.
  • Maintain long-term management plans and ensure a good system of reminders to clients is observed.
  • Offer senior care to all pets over the age of seven.
  • Support growth of the business.

 

Surgery

  • Always recommend pre-anaesthetic blood testing, Intravenous Fluid Therapy and Microchipping.
  • Explain procedures thoroughly and ensure consent forms are always signed; perform a TPR on all cases and complete anaesthetic records. Provide written estimates to clients including foreseeable contingencies.
  • Perform surgical procedures cleanly and efficiently; patients should be under anaesthetic for a minimal amount of time. Always seek advice from more experienced vets if it is a new procedure or you have any concerns.
  • Work as a team with the surgical nurse.
  • Always administer pain medication prior to and post-surgery.
  • Histories should be completed prior to finishing the shift.

 

Continuous Education

  • Dedicate yourself to gaining experience, learning and building confidence. Spend time with more senior veterinarians, assist with advanced procedures, consider volunteering at welfare/shelters to improve speed and confidence
  • Ensure you stay current with industry trends and learning; maintain memberships and attend seminars and workshops. Disseminate information to rest of team.
  • Work closely with your Lead Vet Surgeon on your areas for development.

 

General

  • Maintain accurate client details.
  • Maintain good relationships with suppliers and sales representatives.
  • Label pathology samples correctly and complete schedules.
  • Observe strict adherence to legislative and reporting requirements for vet registration, radiation, drugs and pharmaceutical products, radiation and bio-hazards.
  • Ensure all equipment is maintained in good working order. Advise Lead Vet Surgeon immediately of any faulty or damaged equipment.
  • Contribute to a safe and healthy workplace; take responsibility for your own safety.
  • Observe excellent cleanliness and hygiene throughout clinic.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures.
  • Support your team members and foster a positive and friendly work environment.
  • Perform your duties with integrity and respect.
  • Maintain security of clinic, company property (including cash and invoices), client property.
  • Ensure pets are always restrained safely and securely.

 

SKILLS, SPECIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE   

  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science, or in process
  • Current Veterinary Board Registration
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Calm, compassionate, and professional demeanour.
  • Attention to detail and excellent time management.
  • Responsible, organized, self-directed, and hard-working.
  • Team-player.
